‘Tumblr’ poised to overtake ‘Blog’ on Google searches

Tumblr is on the cusp of doing something quite incredible. Google searches mentioning the service are poised to surpass searches for ‘blog’ by the end of the year, showing that the New York-based company has truly established itself as the Web’s most popular blogging platform.

I’m not entirely sure this should be a measure of whether it’s the world’s most popular blogging platform – in a previous blog post, I found that 16% of blogs are on Tumblr / Posterous / TypePad.

Could it be that those 16% are actually more popular than the 43% of blogs that are on WordPress though?

Blogging started as an online journal in the 1990′s where people shared their interests, hobbies and thoughts online.

Online self expression was the main aim of the blogging game.

In 2012 it has evolved into major publishing businesses such as Huffington Post that was sold recently for over $300 million.

It is also used by companies to display their thought leadership and expertise. Blogs are now considered an important part of a companies participation online and no longer the preserve of  the private personal blogger.

The evolution of search engines has also made the creation of unique content in a variety of media vital, to improve brands and businesses online visibility to Google, Bing and Yahoo.

The world of personal self expression is now only a part of what keeps blogging vibrant and an important part of the rapidly growing web.

I’ve picked my favourite stats from Jeff Bullas’ “72 fascinating social media marketing facts & statistic for 2012” (I think ‘fascinating’ is stretching it a bit, but they are quite interesting):

  1. B2C Facebook interaction is 30% higher than average on Sundays. (Mindjumpers)
  2. 95% of Facebook wall posts are not answered by brands. (Mindjumpers)
  3. LinkedIn generates more leads for b2b companies than Facebook, Twitter or blogs. Yet only 47% of b2b marketers say they are actively using LinkedIn vs. 90% on Facebook. (Social Media B2B)
  4. The five most popular tags for Tumblr posts are GIF, LOL, Fashion, Art and Vintage. The U.S. has the largest share of users, followed by Brazil. (Jeff Bullas)
